Dear Countryside Members,
“Everything is so different this year!” if I had a nickel for every time I heard that in recent months, I…well, I wouldn’t be rich, but I would certainly have a heap of nickels!
Covid-19 has rocked our world, and much IS very different. But what is the same? What are the constants in our lives? One is certainly the tender care of our plants, whether in a few pots, or in multiple gardens on a many-acre spread.
The perennials still have to be divided, replanted, deadheaded. The new annuals still have to be chosen and planted (and maybe worked into a space where they couldn’t possibly fit –but somehow they do!). Everything has to be fed and watered, and watered, and watered! Weeding, also is eternal.
That flower arrangement for the table, or to give away, from this year’s garden still delights. The first tomato continues to bring delicious joy. The loss from a critter’s late-night snack still brings annoyance, and the disappearance of the bars of soap we expected to annoy the deer, bafflement.
We’ve had to make many changes, being reminded severely of the illusion of control. Yet the extra hours many of us have had to spend outside in a glorious, if windy, spring were a bonus, among others we might name. looking at the positive, let’s keep on exploring the horticultural side of creation together, creatively!
